Organizing Beauty Products

Updated: Jul 4

With the holiday season slowly wrapping up, many of you have probably spent a decent amount of time with family or at holiday parties and events. When you are in a time crunch, it can be frustrating to sift through an overflowing makeup bag or drawer full of products that you don't even use. I'm sure everyone who wears makeup understands the constant struggle of keeping their products tidy. Creating an organized setup where every item from your makeup armory has a place can streamline your routine and avoid any unnecessary frustration.

Check and Toss

The first step in any organizing project is to throw stuff out, even when it comes to your beauty products! Not as many people know this as they should, but every makeup or skincare item you buy has an expiration date. For example, Liquid foundation and concealer last 6-12 months, lipstick lasts 1 year, and mascara lasts 3 months. With this in mind, throwing out old makeup becomes a little easier and creates more space for new products! After throwing away unusable products, the next step is to group them into categories ready for organization.

Countertop

This is the best way to store your products if you have some really cool containers and bottles that you want to show off or if you wish to be able to see everything all the time, all at once. The best way to use this method is to buy an acrylic storage shelf. You can find a simple one with multiple compartments and little drawers or a rotating stand if you have more oversized products. These are very easy to set up and look super stylish.

Drawer

Storing makeup in a drawer is the best way to keep it outta sight and out of the humidity of the bathroom. The only downside for this storage method is that products tend to get tossed around everywhere whenever you open or close the drawer. The best way to combat this is to buy some drawer dividers or tiny boxes. You can even make this from old cereal boxes and items you already have! Cut up the boxes to the exact size you want them to be; think about the dimensions of the products that you have, and use some double-sided tape so that the compartments don't move around.

Shelf

Probably the handiest way to store your products, shelving your makeup does not take much time to set up. How you store your products depends on how big both the shelves and actual products are. Make sure to place all of the products that you use most frequently at the very front of the shelf where it is the easiest to reach. If you have a lot of products with varying heights, play around with your products to try and line them up to where you can see all of the labels. One of my struggles with shelving products is accidentally knocking them off. To combat this, I have tapped about an inch thick strip of cardboard to the bottom of my shelf to create a lip, stopping things from sliding off as easily.

Freestanding

If you are looking for something completely different to store your makeup products in or just don't have enough space, consider buying a completely new shelving system! This type of makeup storage is entirely dependent on the space that you have but, therefore, is also completely customizable. If you have an old bathroom cart or stationary shelving unit lying around, those are perfect for holding all your products. If you're looking to buy a new shelving unit, consider The Helmer storage unit from Ikea. It is small enough to fit in tight places and has wheels to move to wherever the lighting is best for putting together that perfect makeup look ;)

Extra!: Travel Bag

Quick Extra tip! If you're like me and travel with a lot of makeup, invest in a travel toiletry bag. You can get these at luggage stores and also some makeup stores. This bag will keep your makeup strapped down and have all your stuff ready to go on a last-minute trip.
